Community Action
Last Thursday, I went to a nurses meeting at the Utah County Health Department. This last meeting was exceptional and I wanted to share the presentation that we were given. I don't know if any of you have heard of Community Action??? They are a private non-profit charity that works with low-income people in Utah County including: Families, Elderly, Disabled persons and others. The non-profit organization was developed to dedicate to fostering self-reliance in individuals, families and communities. Community Action has served low-income population of this area since 1967, and they work with the community to develop solutions that address poverty and its effects. Last year in 2007: 19,109 food boxes distributed, 1,764 elderly assisted, 187 families whose homes were saved from foreclosure, 189 families purchased their first home, 4,067 families helped through H.E.A.T 523 at-risk or homeless families stabilized, 2 million pounds of food distributed. I was amazed by the programs that this organization offered, Like: Family Development program, Home Buyer and Mortgage counseling program, Trips for kids(Mountain biking), H.E.A.T Program, Food Pantry Program, and Advocacy. Some things that stood out to me is that If people plant gardens and they have toooooo much of one thing?? (zucchini!!!!) Then you can just take the left over zucchini down to Community Action and they will refrigerate it until a hungry recipient can come in and pick it up. So.... Any gardeners out there? DON'T let your produce go to waste. Donate it!!!!! Another thing that people can do is have a family night and go down and give service. You would need to call first, but doesn't that sound fun??? I can't wait!!! If anyone wants to help serve or Donate anything at all you can call 801-373-8200 or check the web at www.CommunityActionUC.org or go down to 815 South Freedom Blvd. Suite 100 Provo, UT 84601
